he brutal murder of a young girl launches an extended police investigation. Detective Sarah Lund is supposed to leave for a new life in Sweden, but can't bring herself to leave the case behind. The girl's parents and friends struggle to cope with their loss. Troels Hartmann is campaigning to be mayor of Copenhagen, but struggles when links are revealed between city hall and the murder. Over a time span of twenty days, suspect upon suspect is sought out as violence and political pressures cast their shadows over the hunt for the killer. Two more seasons follow about a series of killings of soldiers and the abduction of an industrial magnate's daughter.
Durante la notte di Halloween scompare una ragazza, Nanna Birk Larsen (Julie R. Ølgaard). Nessuno inizialmente sembra accorgersene: il resto della sua famiglia (padre, madre, due fratellini) è infatti fuori città mentre gli amici la credono in compagnia dell'ex fidanzato. Il giorno successivo, la detective Sarah Lund (Sofie Gråbøl) festeggia con i suoi colleghi l'addio alla polizia di Copenaghen, che lascerà per trasferirsi in Svezia con figlio e nuovo compagno. Tutto sembra sereno mentre percorre per quella che crede essere l'ultima volta le pacifiche strade della capitale danese, tappezzate di manifesti elettorali. Ritraggono Troels Hartmann (Lars Mikkelsen), giovane politicante in ascesa, che lotta col machiavellico sindaco uscente per la poltrona più prestigiosa della città. Queste tre realtà, apparentemente distanti tra loro, sono però pronte ad entrare in collisione. Chiamata a collaborare con il suo sostituto, Jan Meyer (Søren Malling), su un ultimo caso prima dell'addio allo scoglio con la celebre Sirenetta, la detective Lund giunge al ritrovamento, in un canale, del corpo straziato di una giovane. Si tratta proprio di Nanna Birk Larsen, la ragazza che nessuno credeva scomparsa. Ed è morta, annegando, intrappolata nel cofano di una delle automobili al servizio della campagna elettorale di Hartmann. Lund ritarda quindi la sua partenza, intraprendendo una indagine estremamente complessa che finirà col divenire vera e propria ossessione.
