Simon Axler ha perso la magia. Celebre attore di teatro, Axler non riesce più a recitare, a sentire il pubblico, a nutrire il suo dono. Incalzato dalla depressione, tenta un maldestro suicidio nella sua casa nel Connecticut. Soccorso dal suo agente, che vorrebbe convincerlo a tornare in scena, e ‘riabilitato’ in un ospedale psichiatrico, Axler incontra una giovane donna e con lei una ragione di vita. Giovane ed eccentrica, Pegeen, sembra la risposta alle preghiere di Simon ma il principio di realtà avrà la meglio sui progetti senili dell’attore, che troverà in Shakespeare pace e ispirazione.
