Il dottor Frankenstein, nipote del celeberrimo medico, è un affermato neurochirurgo che vive e insegna in una università negli Stati Uniti ed è impegnato a far dimenticare la sua discendenza dal creatore della Cosa. Un giorno però riceve l'invito a recarsi nel castello del nonno in Transilvania a causa di un lascito testamentario. Finisce così per essere attratto dall'atmosfera del luogo, scopre il polveroso laboratorio in cui venne portato a termine l'esperimento e decide di tentare a sua volta l'impresa trafugando un cadavere per restituirgli la vita.
