Andrew Beckett è un giovane e brillante avvocato, tra i collaboratori di punta di uno dei più prestigiosi studi legali di Philadelphia, ma viene licenziato in tronco quando i suoi datori di lavoro scoprono che ha contratto l'Aids. Beckett vuol far valere i suoi diritti e si rivolge a parecchi avvocati, ma nessuno accetta. Anche il celebre penalista nero Joe Miller in un primo tempo rifiuta l'incarico, ma avendo incontrato Beckett in una biblioteca, dove questi sta preparandosi a sostenere la causa da solo, cambia idea.
