Leon, ragazzo sempre in cerca di guai, fa il muratore nella desolata periferia di God's Pocket, a Philadelphia. Durante un giorno al cantiere perde la vita, in quello che viene descritto dal suo capo, come un incidente sul lavoro. Il patrigno Mickey sembra, come tutti, voler chiudere al più presto la vicenda. Ma quando un giornalista locale in cerca della verità mette in dubbio la versione ufficiale della storia, la situazione precipita. Mickey si trova bloccato tra un corpo da seppellire, una moglie da accontentare e un debito che non può pagare.
