Cesare, secondino in un penitenziario, è un uomo bonario, che cerca di aiutare i detenuti. La sua bontà gli procura spesso dei guai, ma Cesare non se ne preoccupa e si consola tenendo una specie di diario, nel quale vengono annotate le vicende dei prigionieri a lui più cari. Tra questi c'è Walter, il giovane ed elegante commesso di una gioielleria, che per il suo temperamento romantico e il suo carattere, si lascia raggirare da una bella truffatrice. Questa, con uno stratagemma, gli sottrae un gioiello prezioso. La buona fede del giovane però non viene riconosciuta e finisce in prigione. Più tardi la donna, pentita, restituisce il gioiello. L'innocenza di Walter non può più essere messa in dubbio: per i due protagonisti della vicenda si prospetta un futuro roseo. C'è poi il caso di Peppino, uno spostato, per il quale il carcere è un soggiorno ideale dove può condurre una vita tranquilla e spensierata: per conquistarselo architetta un divertente imbroglio. Diversa è la vicenda di Giulio, un fannullone, che alza volentieri il gomito. Essendo in preda ai fumi del vino, viene coinvolto, senza saperlo, nell'impresa notturna di una banda di ladri, di cui si pensa sia un componente. Anche per lui scoccherà l'ora della giusta liberazione; ma la lezione non gli è servita e Cesare se lo troverà una sera di nuovo ubriaco in un autobus e dovrà nuovamente prendersene cura.

Cesare, jailer in a prison, is a good-natured man, who tries to help the prisoners. His goodness brings him into trouble often, but Caesar does not care and is consoled by holding a kind of diary, in which are noted the stories of prisoners most dear to him. Among them is Walter, the young and stylish committed to a jeweler, who for his romantic temperament and character, is duped by a beautiful grifter. This, by stratagem, subtracts a precious jewel. The good faith of the young, however, is not recognized, and ends up in prison. Later the woman, repentant, returns the jewel. The innocence of Walter can no longer be doubted: the two protagonists of the story promises a bright future. Then there is the case of Peppino, one moved, for whom prison is an ideal stay where it may lead a quiet and carefree life for conquistarselo architect a fun cheating. Different is the story of Julius, a slacker, raising his elbow happily. Being prey to the fumes of wine, he is involved, without knowing it, in the undertaking night a gang of thieves, which is thought to be a component. Even for him will shoot the hour of liberation right; but the lesson is not served and Caesar if he will find a new drunken evening in a bus and will have to re-take care.
