In piena Pavia, la banda del "Marsigliese" ha effettuato con successo una grossa rapina, lasciando a terra, tra l'altro, il cadavere di un poliziotto. Nonostante le ostilità nei sui confronti da parte dell'ispettore Calò, che non ne approva i metodi troppo drastici, si immerge nelle indagini Tomas Ravelli, agente già da tempo trasferito all'Interpol. Il duro poliziotto da cinque anni attende di poter vendicare la morte della moglie, avvenuta solo un anno dopo il matrimonio, a Marsiglia, nel corso di una analoga rapina ad una banca. Con l'aiuto del fedele brigadiere Lavagni, messo alle sue calcagna da Calò per controllarlo, Tomas ben presto mette alle corde il Marsigliese che è effettivamente l'assassino della moglie del poliziotto. La piccola banda, non appena iniziano le difficoltà, si frantuma e perde diversi uomini. Seguendo la pista dei cadaveri e delle armi, Ravelli costringe il Marsigliese a precipitare la fuga verso il Po dove lo attende Mizar, un tunisino. Raggiunto l'avversario, per meglio consumare la propria vendetta, Ravelli straccia la tessera di poliziotto. E' il momento della resa dei conti.
