Dopo l'8 settembre il sottotenente Alberto Innocenzi, conscio dei doveri del grado che ha sulla divisa, fa il possibile per mantenere unito il suo reparto, aspettando ansiosamente istruzioni precise. Quando si rende conto che non ne verranno, dimentica il senso del dovere e della disciplina e diventa come tanti altri, uno sbandato. Alberto getta la divisa, veste abiti che lo trasformano in un altro uomo e si unisce a tre militari del suo reparto che cercano di raggiungere al più presto casa. Tra questi uomini non c'è più alcun legame, né di subordinazione, né di solidarietà, né di amicizia. Tutti e quattro, però, hanno perso il senso di ciò che è giusto e ciò che non lo è. Incontrano dei militari che vanno in montagna per partecipare alla resistenza contro i tedeschi, ma a loro sembra una follia. Vedono morire un loro compagno per mano dei tedeschi, nel disperato tentativo di salvare un'ebrea; ma anche questo episodio li lascia indifferenti. Innocenzi vede catturare il suo caporale perché la moglie ha aiutato un americano; ma è soltanto contento di essersela cavata. Quando arriva finalmente a casa, suo padre però lo incita ad arruolarsi nel nuovo esercito fascista. L'ex ufficiale scappa dalla finestra quando si accorge che suo padre non lo capisce più. Forse l'unico che può capirlo è quel noioso, antipatico geniere Ceccarelli che è rimasto al suo fianco come un cagnolino, ha visto tutto quello che ha visto lui, è passato attraverso le stesse esperienze. Si forma tra i due un vincolo di solidarietà, una nuova strana amicizia. Quando Innocenzi, braccato dai tedeschi, riesce a mettersi in salvo, vede che l'amico è stato ferito nel tentativo di fuga e allora esce dal suo nascondiglio, prende un mitra, spara, va ad aiutare il suo soldato: ha ritrovato improvvisamente i sentimenti, la dignità dell'ufficiale.
