Dopo la cattura di Totò Riina, il comando di Cosa Nostra passa a un altro boss, Bernardo Provenzano. Anche lui, come il suo predecessore, è partito da Corleone e ha realizzato una mirabolante scalata fino ai vertici della mafia siciliana. La sua figura campeggia dietro ognuno degli eventi terribili che hanno segnato il nostro paese, dai delitti politici alle stragi in cui persero la vita i giudici Falcone e Borsellino che avevano tentato di opporsi allo strapotere mafioso. Provenzano, che si deve confrontare con una Cosa Nostra indebolita dalla sfida con lo Stato e dalle rivelazioni dei collaboratori di giustizia, riesce a ricostruirla dalla base. Con lui cambia radicalmente la strategia mafiosa: gli attacchi a viso aperto alle istituzioni sono messi al bando e si applica, invece, la cosiddetta "strategia dell'immersione", rinsaldando la tela di relazioni politico-economiche che consentono alla mafia siciliana di rimettersi in sesto e di controllare ogni mossa dello Stato.
