Il quartiere ebraico della New York anni '20 costituisce il campo delle imprese di una piccola banda di ragazzini. Li capeggiano Max e Noodles. Noodles è da sempre innamorato di Deborah, una graziosa ragazza ebrea figlia del proprietario di uno dei bar del quartiere, seria e tenace nel suo intento di studiare e di imparare a ballare, per diventare una autentica "star". La banda fa un salto di qualità quando un tizio la incarica, su commissione di un "boss" di un'altra città, di assaltare e rapinare un laboratorio di diamanti.
The Jewish quarter of New York '20s is the field of business of a small gang of kids. Li capeggiano Max and Noodles. The road is their kingdom in which they turn muggings, thefts, blackmail the policeman to the area and so on. The boys grow up and, despite the dark era of Prohibition, to their common fund, that have set up in perfect agreement, flow proceeds are many of them smart exercises. Noodles has always been in love with Deborah, a nice Jewish girl daughter of the owner of one of the neighborhood bars, serious and tenacious in his intention to study and to learn to dance, to become a true "star." The band makes a quantum leap when a guy instructed her, commissioned by a "boss" of another town, to assault and rob a lab diamond.
