Il colonnello Terry Childers ufficiale pluridecorato che ha combattuto in Vietnam, a Beirut e nell'operazione Desert Storm è un veterano dei Marines con 30 anni di carriera alle spalle: in poche parole, un eroe. Adesso però il Paese che ha servito con tanta fedeltà lo mette sotto processo a causa di una missione di soccorso finita in tragedia. Come avvocato, ha scelto il Colonnello Hays Hodges, un compagno d'armi al quale ha salvato la vita. Hodges non è il migliore avvocato sulla piazza ma Childers si fida ciecamente di lui e sa che come lui, Hodges capisce cosa voglia dire mettere a repentaglio la prova vita sotto una pioggia di fuoco. Spinto dal dovere e dall'amicizia, Hodges accetta il caso con una certa riluttanza anche perchè comincia a nutrire qualche dubbio sull'uomo che trent'anni prima gli ha salvato la vita in Vietnam.
Colonel Terry Childers highly decorated officer who fought in Vietnam, Beirut and in Operation Desert Storm is a veteran of the Marines with 30 years of career behind him: in short, a hero. But now the country who served so faithfully puts him on trial because of a rescue mission ended in tragedy. As a lawyer, he chose Colonel Hays Hodges, a comrade in arms which saved his life. Hodges is not the best lawyer in the square but Childers is blindly trusts him and knows that like him, Hodges understands what it means endangering the life test under a rain of fire. Driven by duty and friendship, Hodges accepts the case with some reluctance because even begins to have doubts about the man who thirty years earlier saved his life in Vietnam.
