Marino Stroppaghetti è un capofamiglia in cassa integrazione da sei anni, che per tirare avanti fa il sarto, ha la moglie Angelica che rimpiange sempre di non aver sposato il macellaio Maciste con il quale non avrebbe avuto problemi economici. Ci sono poi i tre figli un po' balordi; Massimo il grande, ha la fissazione di essere un batterista d'eccezione, Tiziana, l'unica femmina, è una teledipendente incapace di dialogare se non di programmi televisivi, Massimiliano, il piccolo, che forse è il più sveglio di tutti. Infine c'è il nonno, filatelista, che crede di possedere francobolli preziosissimi. Vivono tutti più o meno serenamente, quando una mattina arriva l'ingiunzione di sfratto. E' la disperazione; Marino cerca aiuto, lo trova in un sedicente funzionario dell'Istituto Case Popolari che promette di fargli avere una casa se gli vengono "offerti" tre milioni. Si fa del tutto per ottenerli grazie ad alcuni risparmi di Angelica e ad una piccola vincita al Totocalcio. Finalmente la nostra famiglia ha una casa; ma è solo una grossa truffa, il sedicente funzionario è un volgare ladro ricercato da tutte le Questure d'Italia. Marino ed i suoi sono di nuovo in strada; tentano di occupare un appartamento, chiedono asilo ad una chiesa, si stabiliscono su un autobus, ma rimangono sempre senza alloggio. Vengono ospitati da un guardiano di cimitero; qui però ci sono loschi individui trafficanti di droga e Marino viene arrestato in seguito ad un 'irruzione della polizia. Uscito dal carcere, trova ad accoglierlo i suoi familiari e purtroppo anche i soliti grossi problemi di casa. Non resta altro che stabilirsi nei cassonetti della Nettezza Urbana.
