Da poco rimasto vedovo, ha priorità diverse da quelle di un tempo. E' il solo a prendersi cura dei figli, e gli orrori della guerra ancora lo ossessionano. "Volete sapere se sono disposto a combattere contro l'Inghilterra? La risposta è no. Sono già stato in guerra e non ho nessuna voglia di farlo di nuovo ", dichiara Martin in un sentito discorso all'Assemblea di Charleston : "Ho sette figli, mia moglie è morta. Chi si occuperà di loro se io vado in guerra?". Gabriel, il figlio maggiore, con condivide i dubbi del padre. Le accese discussioni, gli opuscoli ed i bollettini che nascono nelle chiese e nelle città e si diffondono rapidamente hanno prodotto una certa impressione nel giovane. La guerra s'avvicina, e la causa per cui ci si prepara a combattere è giusta. Incurante de padre, Gabriel si unisce ai combattenti.
