Carlo Piergentili - un oboista che, con la moglie Serena, violoncellista, fa parte dell'orchestra di Spoleto - ha la madre in fin di vita. Carlo deve avvertire sua sorella Silvia - tanto irrequieta e vagabonda, quanto lui è mite e amante della vita tranquilla - e chiederle di tornare a casa. Il telegramma la raggiunge in Grecia, ma lei arriva soltanto poco prima della tumulazione. Da quel momento sullo sfortunato e generoso fratello piombano un mare di guai, poiché Silvia si installa in casa sua. Silvia è una donna dal passato avventuroso, sempre in giro per il mondo, ha un ex marito a Spoleto, incapace di perdonarla, un uomo in Ungheria, dove ha lasciato anche il figlioletto Zoltan, e un anziano amante, sposato e con figli, a Milano. Se tutto ciò non bastasse, Silvia è anche perseguitata da un assillante creditore di Torino. Mentre Serena entra in crisi per l'ivadenza di Silvia, questa chiede al fratello di accompagnarla a Budapest a riprendersi il figlio. Carlo accetta e i due fratelli riescono, dopo varie peripezie, a riprendersi il bambino, con l'aiuto del padre di Zoltan, un campione di nuoto ormai immobilizzato. Silvia decide di andare a vivere con l'avvocato milanese, ma l'idillio dura poco e lei lo lascia, scomparendo come al solito nel nulla. L'avvocato riporta il piccolo Zoltan a Spoleto e lo affida a Carlo, che si reca a Londra a cercare Silvia, che si è messa con un cantante inglese, rimediando un proiettile alla spalla ad opera di una moglie gelosissima. Dopo il rientro a Spoleto di Carlo e Silvia, Serena, esasperata da una situazione diventata ormai intollerabile, se ne va da casa. E a Carlo, sempre mite e come intontito dal susseguirsi degli eventi, toccherà occuparsi di Silvia e del nipotino, che ormai lo chiama papà.
Carlo Piergentili - an oboeist who, with his wife Serena, cellist, is part of the orchestra of Spoleto - has her mother in the end of life. Carlo accepts and the two brothers succeed, after various vicissitudes, to recover the baby, with the help of Zoltan's father, a swim swimming sample now immobilized. Silvia decides to go to live with the Milan lawyer, but the idyll lasts little and she leaves him, disappearing as usual in the nothingness. The lawyer reports the little Zoltan to Spoleto and entrusts him to Carlo, who goes to London to look for Silvia, who has gone to an English singer, repairing a projectile on his shoulder by a jealous wife. After returning to Spoleto of Carlo and Silvia, Serena, exasperated by a situation that has now become intolerable, leaves home. And to Carlo, always mild and as if the events of the events happened, she will deal with Silvia and her nephew, who is now called Daddy.
