Un uomo di misero aspetto, dopo aver confabulato con un compare cui indica un nome dall'elenco telefonico, va a trovare Gerardo. Ha bisogno di soldi e gli propone l'acquisto di un candeliere d'argento. Allorché Gerardo si allontana per rispondere alla chiamata telefonica del compare, il truffatore sostituisce il pacchetto contenente il candeliere con un altro, ma mentre sta per andarsene Gerardo lo ferma: "C'è tanta gente, e hai scelto proprio me!", gli dice ridendo, e prende l'aria di un maestro che catechizza lo scolaro. Alla mente del truffatore s'affaccia il ricordo del carcere, in cui ha certamente conosciuto quell'uomo. L'altro glielo conferma: sì, lui è proprio Gerardo, l'artista. E inizia il racconto delle sue brillanti gesta. E' stato in prigione una volta, ma da allora in poi l'ha sempre fatta franca, portando a compimento le più fantastiche truffe. Da giovane ha fatto l'attore di varietà e ha sofferto la fame, ma quell'esperienza non è stata inutile. Ha imparato allora a imitare gli atteggiamenti e l'aspetto dei vari personaggi che, di volta in volta, si è trovato a dover impersonare per raggirare le sue vittime. Sulle scene del varietà ha conosciuto Annalisa, la quale s'è illusa di riuscire a sposarlo e a riportarlo sulla retta via. All'opera di redenzione ha dovuto rinunciare, ma non ha rinunciato a sposarlo. Per strapparlo ad Elena, complice di Gerardo, Annalisa s'è piegata ad aiutarlo lei stessa nelle sue disoneste imprese. Per la truffa del matrimonio Annalisa si è offerta di sostituire Elena ed è riuscita a farsi sposare sul serio, chiamando un vero prete a celebrare le nozze, che dovevano essere una burla ideata da Gerardo. Questi si è rassegnato allo scherzo di cui è stato vittima, ma ora ricorda all'ascoltatore che non bisogna fidarsi delle donne, né degli amici. L'altro approva, ma aggiunge che non bisogna fidarsi neppure dei truffatori e tira fuori un paio di manette: è un Commissario di polizia. Ma al volante dell'auto di polizia c'è Chinotto e il presunto Commissario è un complice. Si tratta di uno stratagemma architettato da Gerardo per sfuggire alla moglie.
A miserly-looking man, after confusing with a look that indicates a name from the phone book, finds Gerardo. He needs money and proposes to buy a silver candlestick. When Gerardo moves away to answer the phone call, the scammer replaces the packet containing the candlestick with another, but as Gerardo is about to leave, he says, "There are so many people, and you have chosen me!" He says laughing, and takes the air of a master catechizing the schoolboy. In the mind of the villain, he remembers the memory of the prison, where he certainly met that man. He then learned to imitate the attitudes and looks of the various characters who, from time to time, found themselves having to impersonate to harass their victims. On the scenes of the variety she met Annalisa, who was delighted to be able to marry him and bring him back on the right track. In the work of redemption he had to give up, but he did not give up to marry him. To snatch Elena, Gerardo's accomplice, Annalisa has bent to help her in her dishonest business. For the marriage scam Annalisa offered to replace Elena and managed to get married seriously, calling a true priest to celebrate the wedding, which was supposed to be a joke designed by Gerardo. He resigned to the joke he was victim to, but now he remembers the listener that women or friends should not be trusted. But at the wheel of the police car there is Chinotto and the alleged Commissioner is an accomplice. This is a stratagem designed by Gerardo to escape his wife.
