Per diecimila anni, il popolo dei Galra ha creato un grande impero, comandato dal potente e malvagio Zarkon, e ha governato distruggendo pianeti e schiavizzando varie popolazioni aliene. L'unica arma in grado di fermare il suo malefico piano di conquista di ogni galassia esistente è Voltron, il Difensore dell'Universo. Da quando però, al culmine della guerra, il pianeta Altea di Re Alfor è stato distrutto, il Difensore sembra essere svanito nel nulla, scomposto nelle sue componenti (5 leoni robot) nascoste in vari avamposti dell'universo.
Nel presente, ci troviamo sulla Terra, dove la Galaxy Garrison, un'importante accademia, istruisce cadetti per farli diventare piloti e ingegneri di astronavi. Da circa un anno sono scomparsi il Comandante Holt con suo figlio Matt e il pilota Takashi "Shiro" Shirogane, inviati in una missione sul pianeta Kerberos, al confine con il Sistema Solare.
Lance, Hunk e Pidge sono tre cadetti della Garrison che, essendo venuti a conoscenza dell'atterraggio del famoso Shiro lì nei pressi e dopo aver udito (manomettendo le telecamere di sicurezza grazie a Pidge) dell'esistenza di forme aliene non amichevoli, decidono di salvare il sopravvissuto dai controlli degli ufficiali dell'accademia, che si rifiutano di ascoltarlo. Vengono però preceduti da un misterioso ragazzo: Keith, uno dei più recenti e brillanti piloti della Garrison, allontanato dall'accademia per indisciplina. I cinque ragazzi si troveranno tutti insieme e scopriranno in un anfratto sottoterra un gigantesco Leone Blu robot, che al comando di Lance li porterà attraverso un wormhole, sul pianeta Arus, a molte galassie di distanza dalla Terra. Qui incontreranno la Principessa Aurora, figlia di Re Alfor di Altea, e il consigliere/meccanico della corona Coran, gli unici Alteani ancora in vita dopo millenni, perché messi in delle criocapsule dal re in persona. Aurora è l'unica ad avere le coordinate per trovare gli altri Leoni. Insieme infatti, i cinque robot costituiscono le parti del Difensore dell'Universo. Dato che il Leone Blu aveva scelto Lance, ad Hunk verrà assegnato il Leone Giallo, a Pidge il Leone Verde, a Keith il Leone Rosso e a Shiro il Leone Nero e leader di Voltron. Dopo che avranno trovato tutti i Leoni, ostacolati nelle ricerche dai Galra, si addestreranno duramente per diventare i nuovi Paladini di Voltron, per porre fine alla malvagità di Zarkon e riportare pace nell'universo.
