Michael MacCauley è un mite pendolare di Tarrytown che tutti i giorni prende il solito treno per recarsi a Manhattan, dove lavora nel campo delle assicurazioni, al quale è passato dopo anni di servizio nella polizia di New York. Un giorno viene licenziato, e mentre sta prendendo il treno che lo riporterà a casa viene avvicinato da una donna, Joanna.
Per passare il tempo, Joanna gli propone una sfida: trovare un passeggero, nome in codice Prynne, che non dovrebbe trovarsi sul treno, e la cui esistenza mette in pericolo quella di tutti gli altri occupanti; Prynne ha con sé una borsa, all'interno della quale dovrebbe esserci un oggetto rubato: se Michael riuscirà a riconoscerlo e a infilare nel bagaglio un localizzatore GPS prima che Prynne scenda alla stazione di Cold Spring, otterrà una ricompensa di 100 000 dollari. Quando Joanna lascia il treno Michael, inizialmente convinto si tratti di uno scherzo, non sembra prendere la cosa troppo sul serio, ma vinto dalla curiosità si reca infine nel luogo indicatogli in uno dei gabinetti, trovando parte della somma e capendo quindi che non si tratta di un gioco.........
Michael MacCauley, a former police officer, is a family man with a wife and son. He goes through the same routine train commute to work and back every day, taking the Hudson Line from Tarrytown to Grand Central Terminal, only to be fired from his job as a life insurance salesman after ten years.
On the train home, Michael meets a mysterious woman named Joanna. Joanna proposes a hypothetical situation to Michael, asking him to do one little thing, the results of which would have consequences that he would know nothing about, but would affect one of the passengers on the train. Joanna's one little thing that she wants Michael to do is locate "Prynne," an unknown passenger, and plant a GPS tracker on him or her. Out of curiosity, Michael searches the bathroom and finds an envelope with $25,000, as alluded to by Joanna, and realizes that the situation is not hypothetical.........
