Narra delle peripezie a cavallo di varie epoche della storia statunitense (il 1955, il 1985, il 2015 e il 1885) affrontate dal giovane Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) e dal suo amico, lo stravagante scienziato Emmett "Doc" Brown (Christopher Lloyd), inventore di una bizzarra macchina del tempo ricavata da un'autovettura, una DeLorean DMC-12. Nel corso dei tre episodi i due si trovano a risolvere diversi problemi per evitare catastrofici paradossi temporali, come il possibile mancato matrimonio dei genitori di Marty negli anni cinquanta (in seguito a questo fatto Marty e i suoi fratelli non esisterebbero più), l'arresto del figlio di Marty nel 2015, la morte di Doc per mano di un feroce pistolero nel 1885 e l'uccisione del padre di Marty per mano del suo eterno rivale Biff Tannen (Thomas F. Wilson).
It tells of the ups and downs of various epochs in US history (1955, 1985, 2015 and 1885) faced by young Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) and his friend, the extravagant scientist Emmett "Doc" Brown (Christopher Lloyd), the inventor of a bizarre time machine derived from a car, a DeLorean DMC-12. During the three episodes the two find themselves solving different problems to avoid catastrophic temporal paradoxes, such as the possible marriage failure of Marty's parents in the fifties (following this fact Marty and his brothers would no longer exist), the arrest of the Marty's son in 2015, the death of Doc at the hands of a ferocious gunslinger in 1885 and the murder of Marty's father at the hands of his eternal rival Biff Tannen (Thomas F. Wilson).
