ROMAN J. ISRAEL, ESQ. is a dramatic thriller set in the underbelly of the overburdened Los Angeles criminal court system. Denzel Washington stars as Roman Israel, a driven, idealistic defense attorney who, through a tumultuous series of events, finds himself in a crisis that leads to extreme action. Colin Farrell costars as the monied, cutthroat lawyer who recruits Roman to his firm.
Roman è avvocato a Los Angeles e lavora in uno studio che si occupa di clienti, appartenenti a classi sociali bisognose, spesso impossibilitati ad avere una difesa degna di questo nome. Roman, anche per il carattere che ha che lo spinge a non trattenersi dinanzi a palesi ingiustizie, è stato sempre tenuto dal suo collega William Jackson nelle retrovie a preparare la documentazione dei casi. Quando però William viene ricoverato in ospedale senza speranza di recupero tocca a Roman presentarsi in tribunale e già la prima causa gli crea dei problemi. Le cose si complicano quando lo studio viene chiuso e chi si deve occupare dell'operazione comprende le sue doti e ne vuole acquisire le competenze mettendole però a servizio del puro e semplice guadagno. Roman cerca di barcamenarsi fino a quando un giorno si fa tentare da un'azione illegale.
