“The Clash” è un album forte, che tira giù i muri, che rivendica diritti e grida contro una società con i paraocchi.
“Non scrivere sull’amore, ma scrivi cose importanti”, sembra che queste parole di Rhodes a Joe Strummer abbiano contribuito a far nascere un album carico di ribellione, una ribellione incanalata nella musica e in ogni singola traccia..”Black man got a lotta problems, but they don’t mind throwin’ a brick, white people go to school, where they teach you how to be real thick..”, le parole di White Riot sono chiare e i Clash non sono da meno, se è iniziata la rivolta nera che abbia inizio anche la rivolta bianca.
Il brano venne scritto da Strummer e Simonon dopo aver assistito agli scontri tra immigranti e poliziotti, nel 1976, durante il carnevale di Notting Hill.
