Johnny Starrett, che coltiva un appezzamento di terreno in una vallata solitaria, deve subire i soprusi di un certo Ryker. Vantando ipotetici diritti, costui vorrebbe impadronirsi di tutta la valle, cacciando gli altri coloni. Un giorno arriva alla fattoria di Starrett un cavaliere sconosciuto, che viene accolto con cordialità da Johnny, da sua moglie Mary e dal piccolo Joe, e viene invitato a rimanere a partecipare ai lavori della fattoria. L'uomo accetta l'invito. In una rissa scoppiata tra gli uomini di Ryker e i coloni, il nuovo venuto, che si chiama Shane, si batte al fianco di Johnny e dei suoi amici riuscendo ad avere la meglio. Ma Ryer non si arrende: egli chiama in paese Wilson, un losco pistolero, le cui violenze inducono molti coloni ad andarsene. Johnny decide di resistere e allora Ryker, per toglierlo di mezzo, gli tende un tranello, invitandolo ad una riunione. Al posto di Johnny, però, parteciperà Shane. Eccezionale tiratore, questi, nel corso di una lotta furibonda, uccide tutti gli avversari. La tranquillità è tornata nella valle; ma Shane essendosi accorto che una sua ulteriore permanenza turberebbe il buon accordo esistente tra Johnny e Mary, della quale Shane si è innamorato, decide di andarsene con gran rammarico di tutti, specialmente del piccolo Joe.
