Il film vede protagonista Nicholas Easter (John Cusack), ex studente di legge. New Orleans: un impiegato appena licenziato entra nel suo vecchio ufficio sparando ai presenti. Due anni più tardi la vedova di una delle vittime decide di intentare causa contro la società produttrice dell'arma usata dall'assassino, colpevole per aver venduto la pistola con troppa facilità.
Il processo che ne consegue vede in ballo milioni di dollari. A sostenere la moglie della vittima c'è Wendell Rohr (Dustin Hoffman), avvocato vecchio stampo, mentre Rankin Fitch (Gene Hackman), un uomo senza scrupoli incaricato di manipolare la Giuria, rappresenta la difesa. Tra i giurati c'è però un personaggio controverso: Nicholas Easter che, nonostante abbia fatto di tutto per farsi escludere dalla commissione, sembra in realtà dirigere i giochi dall'interno. Ma cosa nasconde il suo passato? E qual è il suo vero scopo?
