Charlie Babbitt (Tom Cruise) è un venditore di automobili pieno di debiti che, alla morte del padre, scopre di non essere l’erede del patrimonio di famiglia. In questa occasione viene a sapere anche dell’esistenza Raymond (Dustin Hoffman), suo fratello maggiore affetto da autismo, che si trova ricoverato in una clinica psichiatrica di Wallbrook. Frustrato a causa della mancata eredità e arrabbiato per essere stato tenuto all’oscuro dell’esistenza di un fratello, Charlie decide di rapire Raymond per poter entrare in qualche modo in possesso del denaro diventandone il tutore. Dopo il sequestro, propone al dottore che ha in cura Raymond di riportare l’uomo in clinica in cambio di metà patrimonio. In seguito al rifiuto del medico di diventare suo complice, Charlie perde anche l’appoggio della sua fidanzata Susanna (Valeria Golino), che si arrabbia moltissimo per il modo in cui tratta il suo povero fratello.
Nel corso del viaggio verso Los Angeles, in Charlie iniziano a riaffiorare i ricordi legati a uno strano personaggio che quando era un bambino gli canticchiava delle canzoncine e che all’improvviso era scomparso dalla sua vita. Quando si rende conto della straordinaria capacità di Raymond di fare i calcoli, Charlie decide di sfruttarla per giocare a Las Vegas e guadagnare la cifra che gli serve per liberarsi definitivamente dei debiti. L’idea funziona e con la tranquillità economica Charlie riallaccia anche i rapporti con Susanna. Charlie prende in considerazione l’idea di chiedere l’affidamento di Raymond, ma in seguito a un incidente domestico si rende conto di non esserne all’altezza e decide di riportare il fratello alla clinica. Tuttavia, il lungo viaggio fatto insieme consente ai due fratelli di riavvicinarsi e a scoprire che la diversità a volte rappresentare un punto di forza.
