Los Angeles, 1970. Larry "Doc" Sportello è un investigatore privato che si vede chiedere aiuto da una sua ex, Shasta. La donna vuole infatti evitare che l'uomo con cui ha una relazione, il miliardiario Mickey Wolfmann, sposato con un'altra donna, venga internato dalla moglie e dall'amante di quest'ultima. Doc accetta di aiutarla, intraprendendo a sua insaputa un cammino che lo porta ad incontrare una serie di stravaganti personaggi e vivere bizzarre situazioni.
