Un gruppo di laureandi di un college americano festeggia l'addio al celibato di Kenneth Waggener. Ma quando questi arriva ha il muso lungo e la testa altrove: ha deciso di lasciare la fidanzata Judy (che vive in un altro Stato) perché gli è arrivata la cartolina-precetto del Governo per il suo arruolamento (destinazione Vietnam: siamo nel 1971). Analogo avviso è arrivato anche a Gardner Barnes, il riconosciuto capo gruppo (che, da parte sua, ha già deciso di squagliarsela). Insieme a Phil Nicks, Dorman e Lester decidono di fare un lungo viaggio nel Texas con l'aiuto dell'occhialuto Phil, per divertirsi e godere comunque delle gioie effimere, ma piacevoli, che una tale evasione può loro consentire.
