Gioventù bruciata (Rebel Without a Cause) è un film del 1955 diretto da Nicholas Ray. Nel ruolo del protagonista compare James Dean, in quella che rimane la più celebre delle sue tre interpretazioni prima della morte, avvenuta il 30 settembre dello stesso anno in un incidente automobilistico.
Nel 1990, il film è stato scelto per la conservazione nel National Film Registry della Biblioteca del Congresso degli Stati Uniti. Nel 1998 l'American Film Institute l'ha inserito al cinquantanovesimo posto della classifica dei migliori cento film statunitensi di tutti i tempi.

Il protagonista della vicenda è Jim Stark (James Dean), un ragazzo affascinante e ribelle che si è da poco trasferito con la famiglia a Los Angeles.
Il suo ingresso nella nuova città è segnato dall’arresto per ubriachezza molesta. I genitori e la nonna del ragazzo accorrono alla stazione di polizia, pagando la cauzione e liberando Jim dalla prigione. Sebbene si dimostrino preoccupati per la sorte di Jim, l'atteggiamento rivoltoso del giovane è scaturito proprio dal logorato rapporto con la sua famiglia, accresciuto da una gravosa distanza emotiva e dall’incapacità di comunicare.
Alla stazione di polizia, Jim conosce Judy (Natalie Wood), una ragazza problematica che sfoga la frustrazione per il mancato rapporto con suo padre attraverso adolescenziali scorribande. La ragazza, infatti, fa parte di una cricca di teppisti capeggiati da Buzz Gunderson (Corey Allen). Quest’ultimo, infastidito dall’attenzione che il nuovo arrivato riesce a catalizzare, sfida Jim in una prova estrema.
L’errore fatale di Buzz alimenterà il clima di tensione e Jim sarà ritenuto colpevole dalla feroce cricca del teppista. Grazie all'aiuto di Judy e del fedele Plato (Sal Mineo), che ha idealizzato il ribelle e lo osserva come un mito, il ragazzo riesce a nascondersi dalla ritorsione della banda. Ma la situazione è destinata a precipitare, trasportando i ragazzi di questa gioventù bruciata nel caos, che renderà impossibile la redenzione a favore di una fine tragicamente sbagliata…
