Un corpo fiammeggiante, che ha l'aspetto di un enorme aerolito, cade una sera nelle vicinanze di una piccola città della California, richiamando un gran numero di cittadini, tra i quali il pastore con la nipote ed un giovane scienziato, che studia l'energia nucleare. Questi scopre che il misterioso oggetto è pericolosamente radioattivo; e durante la notte il presunto aerolito rivela la sua vera natura. Si tratta di una specie di macchina infernale, dalla quale escono strani corpi volanti, che coi loro raggi deleteri polverizzano i tre uomini di guardia, provocando un vasto incendio. Si scopre ben presto che il missile è stato inviato dai marziani che, non potendo più vivere sul loro pianeta, hanno deciso d'invadere la nostra terra. In base ad un grandioso piano d'aggressione, i missili marziani, contro i quali a nulla valgono i più agguerriti eserciti, portano in tutti i paesi del mondo la desolazione e la morte. Nella California invasa dal panico il pastore è stato polverizzato, mentre la nipote e il giovane scienziato, che hanno imparato ad amarsi, si ritrovano nella città in preda alle fiamme. La donna invoca l'aiuto divino e questo non manca; ad un tratto i missili marziani cadono inerti al suolo. La nostra atmosfera carica di microbi ha debellato i marziani, salvando l'umanità.
