I primi tre minuti del film sono girati senza tagli, con uno dei piani sequenza più famosi della storia del cinema. L'azione è ripresa in uno spazio molto grande, in cui viene presentato l'antefatto (la sistemazione della dinamite nella macchina) e tutti i personaggi principali del film.

Una carica di dinamite uccide due persone in prossimità di un posto di frontiera proprio mentre sta passando di là un poliziotto messicano. Questi si interessa al caso e scopre così che il capitano Hank Quinlan, incaricato ufficialmente dell'inchiesta, produce prove false a carico di un sospettato. Proseguendo nelle sue ricerche, il poliziotto scopre che Quinlan è abituato da anni ad incastrare gli accusati con quel sistema, fabbricando prove false. Resosi conto di quanto sta accadendo, prova a smascherare il suo superiore ma ottiene solo di scatenare la sua violenta reazione.
