Il film ha spunti biografici riferiti ai problemi che egli ebbe ed è molto critico nei confronti degli Stati Uniti.
Un re a New York fu censurato negli Stati Uniti per quasi vent'anni.
È l'ultimo film dove Chaplin recitò come attore protagonista.

Un re di uno stato europeo va in esilio negli Stati Uniti d'America, da lui ritenuta come la patria della libertà. Dal momento che scenderà dall'aereo però la sua vita non sarà molto tranquilla, avendo a che fare con una giornalista, il mondo della pubblicità, un bambino terribile e la Commissione per le Attività Antiamericane.
Stanco di tutto ciò decide di ripartire, sperando che presto anche in America le cose cambieranno.
