L'agente di prestito bancario Carl Allen (Jim Carrey) è stato lasciato da sua moglie Stephanie. Ha una visione sempre più negativa della sua vita e ignora regolarmente i suoi amici Pete (Bradley Cooper) e Rooney (Danny Masterson). Un giorno, un vecchio collega, Nick Lane (John Michael Higgins), gli suggerisce di andare ad un seminario sull’ autostima, che incoraggia a dire "Sì!” ad ogni cosa. Da quel momento Carl inizia a cogliere ogni opportunità che gli si presenta. Rinnova le sue amicizie con Pete e Rooney; crea un legame con il suo capo, Norman (Rhys Darby); assiste la fidanzata di Pete, Lucy (Sasha Alexander), frequenta corsi di lingua coreana e altro ancora.
Guadagna una promozione aziendale al lavoro e, sfruttando le sue lezioni di chitarra convince un uomo a non suicidarsi. Grazie a un volantino, si imbatte in un gruppo chiamato Munchausen da Proxy la cui cantante principale è Allison. Lui é subito incantato dalla sua stranezza e lei dalla spontaneità di lui e iniziano così a frequentarsi. Carl e Allison decidono di prendere il primo aereo disponibile per andare fuori città e finiscono a Lincoln, nel Nebraska, dove approfondiscono il loro rapporto. Durante il check-in per il volo di ritorno, vengono fermati da agenti dell'FBI che definiscono Carl un potenziale terrorista perché ha preso lezioni di volo, studiato coreano, approvato un prestito a una compagnia di fertilizzanti, incontrato un iraniano e comprato biglietti aerei all'ultimo minuto. Pete, il suo avvocato, si reca in Nebraska per spiegare le strane abitudini di Carl. Mentre scopre il “Si” facile di Carl, Allison inizia a dubitare che il suo impegno nei suoi confronti sia mai stato sincero. Decidendo che non può più fidarsi di lui, Allison lascia Carl e rifiuta di rispondere alle sue telefonate...
