Con La Ruota delle Meraviglie, Woody Allen torna negli Stati Uniti per la terza volta di fila dopo Irrational Man e Café Society, a soli tre anni dalla fine di una sorta di tour spaziotemporale che l'ha portato ripetutamente in Europa. Dalla Barcellona di qualche anno fa (Vicky Cristina Barcelona, 200 alla Londra contemporanea (Incontrerai l'uomo dei tuoi sogni, 2010), dalla Parigi animata dai Roaring Twenties (Midnight in Paris, 2011) alla Roma dei nostri giorni (To Rome with Love, 2012), per finire sulla Costa Azzurra dei primi anni '30 (Magic in the Moonlight, 2014). Un girovagare che solo un esperto ritrattista dell'animo umano come Allen avrebbe potuto arricchire di personaggi tanto tormentati e scombussolati quanto affascinanti.

Il film ha come sfondo la pittoresca Coney Island, con la spiaggia, la passerella e le scintillanti attrazioni lungo il litorale.
1950, le vite di quattro personaggi si intrecciano ai piedi della celebre ruota panoramica costruita negli anni venti: quella dell'imbronciata e malinconica Ginny (Kate Winslet), ex attrice emotivamente instabile, ora cameriera presso un modesto ristorante di pesce; di suo marito Humpty (Jim Belushi), rozzo manovratore di giostre; del giovane Mickey (Justin Timberlake), un bagnino di bell'aspetto che coltiva aspirazioni da commediografo; e della ribelle Carolina (Juno Temple), la figlia che Humpty non ha visto per molto tempo e che ora è costretta a nascondersi nell'appartamento del padre per sfuggire a un gruppo di spietati gangster che le dà la caccia.
La pittoresca boardwalk fa da sfondo a un racconto fatto di fragili speranze e nuovi sogni, passione e tradimenti, corteggiamenti nervosi e impacciati in puro stile Allen, in un clima di inganno e tensione che stride con le luci delle giostre, l'ilarità e la spensieratezza dei bagnanti. A complicare la situazione l'intromissione sgradita (solo ai personaggi del film) di Max Casella, Steve Schirripa e Tony Sirico.
