In un ospedale psichiatrico di Amburgo, l’alcolista e quarantenne Cahit Tomruk (Birol Unel) incontra Sibel Guner (Sibel Kekilli), una ragazza che ha la metà dei suoi anni. Entrambi hanno cercato invano di togliersi la vita per cause diverse, ma parimenti drammatiche: Cahit, immigrato di origine turche, ha perso sua moglie; Sibel, invece, non riesce più a tollerare l’oppressione della famiglia, anch'essa turca ed eccessivamente conservatrice.
Per risolvere il problema e godere finalmente della libertà tanto agognata, la ragazza chiede all’uomo di acconsentire a un matrimonio di facciata. Seppur riluttante, lui accetta e dà il via alla convivenza, durante la quale entrambi continuano ad avere avventure sessuali con altri partner. Tuttavia, proprio quando Sibel è riuscita a svincolarsi dalle regole che fino ad allora le erano state imposte, Cahit mette tutto a repentaglio con un incontrollabile sentimento di gelosia, che sfocia nell'uccisione di uno degli amanti della donna. Sibel si ritrova sola, con un marito in carcere e una famiglia che vuole ucciderla per il tremendo disonore di cui si è macchiata…
