Chesley Sullenberger (Tom Hanks), detto Sully, è un esperto pilota di linea che si trova al comando di un aereo che il 15 gennaio 2009 decolla dall'aeroporto di New York.
Purtroppo, immediatamente dopo la partenza, il velivolo si scontra con uno stormo di uccelli, causandone la rottura dei due motori. In poco tempo e senza possibilità di errore, Sully deve decidere cosa fare, sperando di riuscire a portare in salvo le 155 persone presenti a bordo tra equipaggio e passeggeri.
L'unica soluzione possibile è tentare un ammaraggio nel fiume Hudson. Per fortuna il piano di Sully ha successo e tutti sono portati in salvo. L'opinione pubblica lo acclama, il pilota è considerato un eroe che ha evitato una catastrofe senza eguali. Tuttavia, la storia non finisce qui: pur avendo portato a termine quello che poi venne definito come il "miracolo dell'Hudson", Sully dovrà affrontare il National Transportation Safety Board, un'agenzia investigativa, indipendente del Governo, che indaga ed emette rapporti in merito agli incidenti che coinvolgono i mezzi di trasporto. Il pilota, diviso tra sentimenti di colpa e fierezza, dovrà sostenere l'inevitabilità e la correttezza delle sue decisioni, non conformi, secondo le accuse, al protocollo.
