Fin dove ti spingeresti per proteggere la tua famiglia? E' una domanda che si pone Keller Dover (Hugh Jackman) costretto ad affrontare il peggior incubo di ogni genitore nel film Prisoners, diretto da Denis Villeneuve.
È un freddo e nuvoloso Giorno del Ringraziamento in un modesto sobborgo della Pennsylvania, il tipo di cittadina in cui i bambini vanno in bicicletta e giocano per strada ogni giorno. All'interno di una calda e ccogliente casa, i Dovers e i Birches, amici per la pelle e vicini di casa, condividono il tradizionale pranzo della festa, rilassati, felici e del tutto a proprio agio. Il mondo gira a meraviglia. Poi, improvvisamente tutto cambia. In un batter d'occhio, Anna e Joy, le due bambine, di appena sei e sette anni, scompaiono nel nulla. È forse la cosa peggiore che ogni genitore e ogni famiglia, possa immaginare. E per i Dovers ed i Birches inizia un traumatico incubo dal quale sembra non abbiano via d'uscita. Mentre i minuti diventano ore, il panico prende il sopravvento. La traccia più evidente conduce ad un vecchio camper, visto poco prima parcheggiato lungo la strada dove abitano. A capo delle indagine c'è il detective Loki (Jake Gyllenhaal), che arresta il guidatore del veicolo, Alex Jones (Paul Dano), ma la mancanza di prove costringe la polizia a rilasciarlo. Mentre vengono seguite diverse piste, la pressione aumenta, sapendo che è in gioco la vita di sua figlia, Dover, fuori di sé, decide di non avere altra scelta che quella di occuparsene da solo.
