Stanlio & Ollio sono stati incarcerati per aver tentato di rubare un anello prezioso, un altro detenuto escogita un piano per farli scappare: i due si sono procurati delle mele che daranno il segnale ai banditi oltre il forte del carcere per calare una scala che li porterà fuori. Ma la guardia sequestra le mele e le lancia oltre il forte; scoperti i banditi all'esterno la guardia apre il cancello principale per cacciarli e Stanlio e Ollio escono fuori senza però successo, poiché una volta chiuso il portone Stanlio ha l'intelligente idea di bussare.
Un governatore deve visitare la prigione mentre i due sono costretti ai lavori forzati quando si apre la mensa: i due, senza un tavolo per mangiare (e senza mangiare) dovranno tagliare della legna al cuoco per poter mangiare, abbatteranno un albero.
