I Mogwai sono un gruppo post-rock scozzese. La formazione è composta da Stuart Braithwaite (chitarra, voce), Dominic Aitchison (basso), Martin Bulloch (batteria), John Cummings (chitarra), Barry Burns (tastiere, chitarra, voce), e si avvale nei live di Luke Sutherland (chitarra, violino), Caroline Barber (violoncello) e Graeme Ronald.
"La nostra unica arma è l'istintività" ha dichiarato Braithwaite, ed effettivamente è proprio quel che si percepisce ascoltando i pezzi, in gran parte strumentali, molto melodici, che alternano momenti di serenità quasi quieta alle sonorità più fragorose.

Il nome Mogwai deriva dal nome delle creature del film Gremlins, anche se il chitarrista Stuart Braithwaite ha puntualizzato che questa scelta "non ha un particolare significato e abbiamo sempre voluto cercare un nome migliore, ma come per molte altre cose non ci siamo mai riusciti".
Il nucleo originario della band era composto da Stuart Braithwaite e Dominic Aitchison, conosciutisi ad un concerto a Glasgow quando avevano quindici anni.. Quattro anni dopo formarono la band con Martin Bulloch alla batteria. Dopo un paio di concerti, ai tre si aggiunse John Cummings come chitarrista. Successivamente si aggiunse anche Brendan O'Hare (Teenage Fanclub, Macrocosmica) che registrò con la band l'album di debutto Mogwai Young Team per poi abbandonarla. In occasione delle registrazioni del secondo album, Come On Die Young, ufficialmente entrò a far parte della band Barry Burns che già aveva suonato con i Mogwai dal vivo in tour. Da allora la formazione è rimasta invariata anche se in diverse occasioni vi si sono aggiunti altri musicisti per le esibizioni dal vivo.
La loro musica, che ha influenzato gruppi come Giardini di Mirò ed Explosions in the Sky, è solitamente etichettata come post rock. Si tratta in genere di brani strumentali, dal tono talvolta malinconico e con rari inserti vocali. Lo stile della band è andato comunque evolvendosi attraverso i vari album. Se Ten Rapid e Mogwai Young Team appaiono in consonanza con i lavori di Tortoise e Slint, già in Come on Die Young si notano delle differenze nei suoni e nell'approccio ai brani, che si fanno più emozionali, ma anche distaccati ed essenziali. Rock Action, pubblicato nel 2001, si caratterizza per suoni molto più armoniosi e meno distorti. La decisione di lavorare di più con suoni non tradizionali, grazie a basi e synth, influenza notevolmente gli album successivi, fino a Mr. Beast, pubblicato nel 2006. Nello stesso anno è stato pubblicato Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait, colonna sonora di un film-documentario dedicato al calciatore francese. The Hawk Is Howling, ultimo disco in studio, è stato invece pubblicato nel 2008.
Nel gennaio 2009, tramite il proprio sito ufficiale, i Mogwai hanno ufficialmente annunciato i dettagli di Burning, un "live film" di Vincent Moon e Nataniel La Souanec, e Special Moves, il primo cd dal vivo. Entrambi sono stati registrati durante i concerti che la band ha tenuto a Brooklyn in occasione del tour negli Stati Uniti del 2009.
Originariamente, erano legati alla Chemikal Underground, etichetta indipendente di Glasgow. Attualmente, negli Stati Uniti i Mogwai sono legati alla Matador Records, ma in Gran Bretagna pubblicano i loro dischi con una propria etichetta, la Rock Action Records.
