La storia ha inizio nell'Arkansas. Louise (Susan Sarandon) lavora come cameriera in un fast food, Thelma (Geena Davis) è una casalinga quasi schiava del marito Darryl, maschilista violento, spesso fuori di casa, che non le dedica molte attenzioni. Louise, dal canto suo, ha una relazione con Jimmy, un uomo che le vuole molto bene, pur non sentendosi appagata. Le due amiche decidono di trascorrere insieme un week-end fuori città, in una casa di montagna di proprietà di un collega di Louise. Partono, a bordo di una vecchia Ford Thunderbird verde di Louise, senza dir nulla ai loro rispettivi mariti. Le due protagoniste si fermano, strada facendo, in un locale. Thelma viene notata da Harlan, un bullo del posto, che subito la aggancia. La serata prosegue fra musica e sbronze e Thelma, alla fine, ha un leggero malore per il troppo alcool. Harlan, approfittando dell'occasione, la porta fuori e nel parcheggio tenta di violentarla. In suo soccorso arriva Louise, con in pugno una pistola che Thelma teneva nella sua borsa: una provocazione verbale di Harlan, provoca una reazione fulminea di Louise che lo uccide con un colpo in pieno petto. Thelma vorrebbe quindi chiamare la polizia, ma Louise (che in passato aveva subito il trauma della violenza sessuale) non è convinta di poter fare affidamento sulla legittima difesa, tantomeno di contare sulla testimonianza degli avventori che avevano visto i due insieme. Insieme decidono di fuggire verso il Messico....
