1968, nella base di Parris Island, si sta svolgendo l'addestramento per i marines in partenza per il Vietnam. L'addestramento é duro e fra le reclute c'é chi resiste con ironia, come il soldato Joker, e chi come "Gomer Pyle", si sottomette alle ripetute torture. Alla fine del corso, in un attimo di follia, Gomer Pyle, uccide il sergente e poi si suicida. Arrivati in Vietnam, un gruppo di marines, tra cui Joker, rimane bloccato nella città di Hue, ed alcuni di loro vengono uccisi da un cecchino. Alla fine i supersisti individuano ed uccidono il nemico: una giovane donna vietnamita.
