Il cacciaballe, naturalmente, è Cristoforo Colombo che, interpretato da Dario Fo, tenta con inganni e intrallazzi di convincere la regina di Castiglia a finanziare la sua spedizione alla scoperta dell'America. Intorno a lui si muovono personaggi più o meno corrotti e spregevoli che si possono incontrare in ogni epoca (anche la nostra), con il risultato di smitizzare non solo la biografia eroica e romantica del grande genovese, ma anche la storia ufficiale della conquista del Nuovo Mondo. Il gioco finirà male, sia per il navigatore, sia per colui che lo impersona nel macabro racconto cinquecentesco. Lo spettacolo, messo in scena per la prima volta nel 1963, corre via veloce e serrato grazie a un protagonista in gran forma, ottimamente coadiuvato da numerosi altri attori e in particolare da Franca Rame che impersona prima Isabella di Castiglia e poi sua figlia Giovanna la Pazza.
