La serie segue le vicende degli abitanti di Chester's Mill, una piccola cittadina del Maine, che si ritrovano tagliati fuori dal resto del mondo a causa di un impenetrabile, misterioso e invisibile campo di forza che circonda tutta la città, comparso improvvisamente dal nulla.
