The Paradise is just that! An amazing show which captivates you very quickly and has you thinking constantly. If it is not about the era, the times, the cast, or writing...It is what is next! I am a definite movie buff with hundreds of thousands of shows watched. Not to say anyone is qualified to say what is good or bad but The Paradise is just simply VERY good in many ways. This series was a refreshing step away from the overdone crime dramas and did not need or require nudity nor profanity to make is superb. Some here criticize the last episode(s) however they may not understand this - the writers knew the show would be canceled well before it ended, sadly, and were required to conjure up a somewhat appealing ending. I am highly disappointed, again, in the BBC's horrid decision to cancel. Those in the BBC who "decided" to cancel are far better off working as shoe makers or barbers and should kindly step out of the entertainment business.
"The Paradise", l'anti-Downton Abbey, è la serie televisiva prodotta da BBC e ispirata al celebre romanzo "Il paradiso delle signore" di Emile Zola che approda in anteprima assoluta su Mya (Mediaset Premium) con la prima stagione inedita, dal 24 maggio 2014 ogni sabato alle 21.15.
"The Paradise" è una serie composta da 8 episodi ambientati nell'Inghilterra del 1870. La giovane Denise Lovett (Joanna Vanderham) arriva a Lambton dalla provincia per cercare fortuna. Trova lavoro al "Paradise", emporio gestito dal signor Moray (Emun Elliott), precursore dei moderni centri commerciali. Nel reparto di abbigliamento femminile Denise è subito vista da Moray come una stella nascente, con il fastidio della caporeparto Miss Audrey (Sarah Lancashire) e della collega Clara (Sonia Cassidy).
Episodio dopo episodio, la serie si sviluppa attraverso le emozioni di chi lavora nel "Paradise" e delle donne d'alta classe che vi entrano per la prima volta, convinte di non poter fare acquisti in un negozio che, proponendo prezzi accessibili a tutti, non prevede differenze di classe. Il "Paradise" diventerà invece un frequentato punto di ritrovo.
La serie cavalca il successo delle serie che hanno recentemente conquistato il Regno Unito e imposto nel mondo uno stile unico e inconfondibile di "British society" retrò. È difficile non paragonare questo prodotto in costume a "Downton Abbey", anche perché in patria è andato in onda in contemporanea. Protagoniste tuttavia sono la classe operaia e quella media, con il suo spirito imprenditoriale e la voglia di rendere nulle le differenze di classe tanto importanti per i protagonisti di "Downton".
"The Paradise" è una rivisitazione del romanzo di Zola, pubblicato nel 1883 e già adattato per il cinema, ad esempio in "Au Bonheur des Dames" di Andrè Cayatte.
Con "Paradise" la BBC ha risposto al successo di "Downton Abbey", della concorrente ITV, riuscendo a raggiungere quasi 6 milioni di telespettatori. Da qui il rinnovo per una seconda stagione.
Il Castello di Lambton, principale location della serie, gode di una fantastica posizione tra i boschi del Wear Valley vicino a Chester le Street, nella contea di Durham. E' stato costruito nel XIX secolo da John George Lambton, primo conte di Durham e progettato dal famoso architetto italiano Giuseppe Bonomi il Vecchio e da suo figlio Ignazio, nello stile - allora di moda - detto "Norman".
